It Can't Just Be Me....

Is it just me??  Fellow writers out there, please weigh in so that I know I'm not losing my marbles.  Is it just me, or do you find yourself getting really angry & moody if 'life' interrupts your writing work?  It can be anything from having to take the clothes out of the dryer to my husband wanting to watch TV together.  The slightest disturbance that forces me to pry myself away from my writing/editing can send me into a grouchy tailspin...there's just never enough time in a day anymore...please comfort me that I'm not alone in this!?   lol

  1. No Dawn. You're not alone. I have a day job I hate, a demanding cat, a husband who somewhat gets me, and roommates who have no clue what being a writer is all about. They rarely ever even crack a book. Reading for them is Facebook and their email. And they HAVE to tell me about their drama when I get home from work because it's so important. *headdesk* I get very testy when I'm in the writing flow and someone or something interrupts me.

  2. Whew Annikka - nice to meet you! We're in the same boat, except that we have a dog! lol My husband is supportive as well, yet he's much like your friends as in, he doesn't read...the man has a higher IQ than most, yet he has no interest in reading! lol

  3. Hi, Dawn. Try this . . . Set aside one hour (or better 1.5 hours) when you can work without interruption. This is your writing time. Ask that others honor your work time. Then set aside the writing and enjoy your hubby and your life. This good advice comes from Maeve Benchley, an accomplished writer with many years of experience. Real life will always interrupt the writing life, if we let it. May your writing go well!

    1. Barring no other demands on your time and a suprememly understanding and supportive husband....I think that's sound advice. Life is a juggling act and when you're a writer, that tosses one more ball into the air. You'll find your stride, Dawn. Anthough there are time when the writing is flowing and you can barely keep up with it, and you have to let other things go. I wish you luck! :)

  4. Thanks ladies! It's just so hard, because I have this 'go go go' attitude when I focus on something I want to do, to the detriment of everything else. Now that I feel the taste of success in my future, I want it NOW! lol

  5. Oh no, not alone! Maybe we should start a "po'd so let me write" club. There is nothing that gets me more than the phone ringing or someone just popping by when I am in the zone. I know it's not a deliberate attempt to mess my mindset up, but it sure does! Yes it is true that you need to set aside a time just for writing. My husband is quite good about that, thankfully, especially as we have 17 projects on the go. Thank you letting me vent too.

  6. Definitely not alone in this. I hate when life interrupts my writing. I can get really miffed. Hubby gives me lots of room and encouragement for the intense times.
