To dye or not to dye?

So...I'm a natural brunette, but in the past, I've had red/auburn hair which was very complementary to me.  I go through these phases, where I think I want to dye it red again; however, that means going to the hair salon, for one.  I hate going to a salon!  I don't have the patience to sit there for hours.  In fact, I cut my own hair just to avoid this...yes, I do...and I receive constant compliments such as "wow, who cuts your hair?"   When I say I do it myself, they're amazed, because it looks so good.  Secondly, it means drying my hair out again.  It took so long for me to get it back to its natural softness and luster.  I have stray gray hairs here and there, but not enough to really make me look old, and I just pluck them out at the roots..so...do I have it dyed again?  I'm so conflicted!  lol

  1. Dawn! This is a question only you can answer! I go through the same thing with my hair...only not red...just blonder, which I'm getting ready to do again! I hate the upkeep, but with summer coming, I'm ready to take that plunge again. :)

  2. I need to re-dye my hair. I went lighter and it is growing out. This time I'm not going with anything with gold in it, jcoust neutral, remember the orange saga? I'm going to do it this week, so being that next weekend, I'll be taking lots of pics, wish me luck! But I was wondering if you ever used Henna? It is all natural. It doesn't actually dye your hair, just coats each hair with color and helps with shine. So basically, you can't use it to go lighter, because it has no bleach in it. It lasts 4-6 weeks and eventually washes out, so you are stuck with it and you don't have to mess with the growing out process. But they have Sherry, burgandy, mahongany, so there are reddish colors. And it won't damage your hair, it actually seals the cuticle of hair. So maybe you should try that first before you start with the harsh dyes! My sis has naturally auburn hair and she uses the red and it really brightens it up and adds more red.

  3. Hey Kell...good advice...however, in order for me to get the color I want, it would require me to have it stripped or made lighter :(

  4. Ohhhh! I had used henna many years ago on my hair when I was still in school! I almost forgot about that! I was platinum blonde from the age of 17, however, until I quit bleaching it at age 63! A couple of times in rhat span I did go back to my natural brunette but would only stay that way for a short time.
